Oxymoron Youth Consulting was started by Mark Hovermale who is a 10 year youth ministry veteran and is the Director of Students at First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth, MI.
Oxymoron is an odd choice for the name of a youth consulting firm for sure. So why name it that? Youth ministry is many times associated with disorganization, craziness, no long-term vision or goals, just fun and no content and pizza. While pizza and craziness is definitely part of the mix, we here at Oxymoron feel that the other descriptions should be a thing of the past. We think that organization, vision, goals for both the short and long term, lots of fun and content should be associated with a great youth ministry. This kind of youth ministry is looked at by many as an oxymoron.
The term oxymoron, defined by the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, is simply: “a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness) ; broadly : something (as a concept) that is made up of contradictory or incongruous elements.” Our goal at Oxymoron Youth Consulting is to help churches make their youth ministries an oxymoron by most standards by helping them include content, organization, and vision to their ministries. Plus, we thought it was a bit out of the ordinary. Frankly, we feel that defines most people involved with students today. We mean that of course, in the best possible way! So now you know a little of the ideas that inspired the name "oxymoron”. Hope you enjoy the site!
